Even as young children, we bond over home-cooked foods at joint birthdays, holidays parties and impromptu family gatherings. As we get older, we begin traveling around the world together. Food always remains the focus and highlight of our travels.
In Taiwan’s scorching heat and humidity, we welcome the sight of mountainous platters of flavor-infused shaved ice, topped with fresh mangos and tasty syrups in Taiwan’s bustling Shilin Night Market. Even before we could finish our first, we are already ordering seconds and thirds!
After reading an article about the closing of our favorite shaved ice vendor in Taiwan, David forwards the article to Danny and Kenneth and jokes about introducing the ice to New York. After sampling all the shaved ice stands in New York, what began as a joke turns quickly into the start of a crazy business (ad)venture. Using our large extended family as guinea pigs, we begin experimenting with several different recipes and flavor profiles.
Wooly’s bursts onto the food scene in June and quickly gains recognition from various media outlets including NBC’s New York Live, Time Out NY and the NY Times. Within months, Wooly's is nominated for a Vendy’s Award by a loyal New York following. Wooly's takes home the grand prize of 2011 Vendy Award for Best Dessert.
We spend the colder winter months experimenting with new and inventive flavors and toppings to add to our growing repertoire.Wooly's expands its reach to South Street Seaport and makes guest appearances at many food festivals, including the Great Googa Mooga, and is featured on a video produced by Food Curated’s Liza De Guia. The video goes viral and becomes an Official Selection for 2012 NYC Food Film Festival.
